Let us introduce you to Juan Galaeno, the actor behind beloved main character Manny in the bilingual, family-friendly show Súper Chefs. Featuring a playful blend of superheroes, live cooking, and vibrant Latin American culture, the show immerses audiences in a unique theatrical culinary experience. Juan offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the magic of Súper Chefs, discussing everything from working with the creative team to the heartwarming audience moments that have touched him the most.
How would you describe the theatre show Súper Chefs? We know it's bilingual and it features real-life cooking…what else?
The best word to describe it is “Fun-tastic!” The show is packed with catchy songs and engaging moments from start to finish. It’s a playful introduction to Spanish and Latin American culture that’s easy for everyone to understand. What really makes it special is the immersive experience—each child in the audience gets an apron and dough balls, so they can cook alongside Manny. They’re not just watching his journey; they’re part of it.
What is the most memorable reaction you’ve had from a child in the audience so far?T
here have been many, but the one that stands out happened recently. A shy boy in the front row seemed a bit uncomfortable at the start, so I made it a point to interact with him. Little by little, he opened up, and by the end of the show, he was dancing with a huge smile on his face during the final songs. His mother later told me that he struggles to make friends and rarely participates in social activities, let alone theatre. His smile and engagement melted my heart—he became Manny’s new best friend that day!
What’s the most fun part about performing in a show that includes superheroes, cooking, and family?
For me, it’s the music. As a Colombian, getting to dance salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, merengue, and bachata on stage is a dream come true. The choreography and songs are the heart of the show, and it’s such a joy to share that energy with the audience, highlighting that we introduce Latin American cooking and superheroes.
How did you work with writer Betsy Picart and director Suzanne Gorman to bring 6-year-old Manny to life?
It was one of the most enriching experiences of my career. Betsy and Suzanne had a clear vision for Manny, and we spent a lot of time discussing his character and life. We quickly realised we had many shared perspectives. Manny’s character feels very close to me. When I was in the casting process and I sent my first self-tape a friend of mine told me: “Mate, Manny is you!” Betsy’s writing and Suzanne’s direction made Manny feel like a playful, loving kid who just wants to make people happy—a touch of love defines him.
What have you learned from playing Manny?
Patience. Both Manny and I learned that the best things in life take time. The most important lesson, though, is asking for help. As adults, we often think we have to handle everything ourselves, but Manny reminds us that it’s okay to speak up and lean on others when we need support.
Who do you think is the dream audience for this extraordinary piece of theatre?
Every child is unique, and their dreams are boundless. The beauty of this show is that it speaks to every single one of them. Whether they dream of being firefighters, presidents, or something else, their pure intentions and kindness are what truly inspire me.
Lastly, please tell us the secret ingredient for the perfect guacamole.
The secret? Tons and tons of love! And, of course, having your mama by your side makes it even better.
